Hey Guys

Another one that is grounding me.

For many revisionist historians, Christopher Columbus has come to personify devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that has decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere.

- devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that has decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere
- devastation and enslavement in the name of progress by which native peoples of the Western Hemisphere have been decimated.
- devastating and enslaving in the name of progress those native peoples of the Western Hemisphere that have been decimated
- devastating and enslaving those native peoples of the Western Hemisphere in the name of progress are decimated
- the devastation and enslavement in the name of progress that have decimated native peoples of the Western Hemisphere

Any suggestions?

According to me,

In B, "by which...." is in passive form.. where as A has in active... So, ignore B
We need noun forms and not VERB+ING ... so ignore C & D
In E, progress is singular.. so "have" is not justified.

the correct answer has to be E .it is "the devastation and enslavement" that have decimated native people !!

Aditya, whenever "that" is used next to the object it is describing then it may be refer to singular or plural object. However, whenever "that" is used away from the object it is describing then it always describe the singular object.

this is not correct interpretation."that" is one of those powerful pronouns that can refer back to far flung nouns and while doing so it can be singular as well as plural .same thing is happening here

Hi Aditya,

Let is look at the meaning of the sentence.

What has decimated people
One would say either progress or devastation and enslavement in the name of progress
In either case singular verb is required.

One would say either progress or devastation and enslavement in the name of progress
In either case singular verb is required.


progress can never cause decimate people !! we need to read sentence very literally
also "devastation and enslavement" is plural .they are joined by "and"
