According to a recent poll of the entering class, joining a fraternity or sorority is still a priority of a majority of freshmen, like that of earlier classes.

A) like that of earlier classes
B) as that for earlier classes
C) just as earlier classes did
D) as have earlier classes
E) as it was of earlier classes

E. This is very similar to a question that I saw in OG, which talks about the goal of buying a house on its own land as it was of generations before is. ....this is paraphrased.

E should be correct. "it" correctly refers to 'joining a fraternity or sorority'
A. like is not needed as we are not comparing nouns
B,C, D - issue with parallelism

the comparison is between joining priority of earlier freshman and incoming freshman class. would pick E

Haaress is right. This is a paraphrase of #73 pg649 in the OG 11. The answer is E

Technically "joining a fraternity or sorority" is a noun phrase, but I guess the comparison is between clauses.

X is goal of Y as X is goal of Z.

However, you should be able to say "joining a fraternity" is like "joining a sorority". You cannot use "as" for comparison because they are both noun phrases.

This is not a question about as vs like. It is about comparison. The question is comparing students joining the fraternity vs classes joining the fraternity. The comparison should be between students.

But if the comparison is between students, then it would be comparing nouns and "as" would be incorrectly used and the OA would be wrong.
