What is this question asking?

Hey all,

This is not for the GMAT but I need help interpreting it. Please, if you would kindly help me here.

I have trouble interpreting the question below. Can you tell me if it's asking for one example or three? Thanks.

"3. Select an example from the readings that illustrates each of the following three statements. Do not use the case involving Hiram Phillips as an example.

a. (20 points) Carefully conceived and implemented incentive schemes can yield improved firm performance.
b. (20 points) Poorly conceived and implemented incentive schemes can yield disastrous results.
c. (20 points) Skillful executives sometimes can find ways to avoid the agency costs associated with monitoring.
"

So, is this asking for one example or three?

I read it as three examples since each one has 20 points possible, but I can see where it's hard to really tell. That's why, even though it makes it harder strategically, I like that the GMAT has the experimental questions...they'll make sure that they're all written fairly!

i think it's asking for one example [From the readings] which can illustrate all the 3 points a, b, and c .

No thinking is required. Just read the sentence in the following way.

Select an example that illustrates each of the following three statements. Do not use the case involving Hiram Phillips as an example.

An example from the reading that illustrates----> That refers to an example.

From the reading is just prepositional phrase.

This is the form of "X of Y that", where that refers to X or Y on the basis of the following two things:

1. The verb after the "that"
2. The intended meaning of the sentence.

Test these two:

1. Verb after that is "illustrates". it matches with the singular "an example"
2. The meaning of the sentence. Example can illustrate, NOT the book. Even an example can be in the book to illustrate. This also matches with "an example".

Conclusion:

An example from the reading that illustrates---means one example will be there, and that one will illustrate three.

Thanks.
