A higher interest rate is only one of the factors, albeit an important one, that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade.

(A) that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade.
(B) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, as it did earlier in the decade
(C) that keeps the housing market from spiraling out of control, as it did earlier in the decade
(D) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, like earlier in the decade
(E) that keep the housing market from spiraling out of control, like it did earlier in the decade

The Ans is C
because
1. Its - a higher interest rate is a sungular noun , hence "keeps "
2.Like is to compare nouns and as to compare phrases.

I have to disagree with your answer. The best answer choice is B. If you have a construction like "noun verb one of the noun that verb". The verb is going to go with the noun immediately preceding the the word that. (factors) So you can rule out A and C. You have to use as instead of like because you compare actions. So you can rule out ADE. I think that the toughest part is to see that the term "that" refers to factors.

It would be nice if you underline the part which is is replaced by one of the answer choices and set the spoilers for your/official answer.

I second it. Ans should be B. By the way this question has already been discussed in this forum plus in other forums as well.

Just to add...

A higher interest rate is only one of the factors that keep (CORRECT) - > subject of 'keep' is factors and hence plural
Literal meaning: There are several factors that keep xxxxxxxx. A higher interest rate is one among those.

A higher interest rate is the only one of the factors that keeps (CORRECT) - > subject of 'keeps' is one and hence singular

Please note that the inclusion of 'the' changes the meaning

Guys, humble request, please post the source of the question and please please and please underline the part of the sentence.

I disagree with the ans. I agree that we need 'as' and not 'like', but problem with C is S-V issue.

One of X that - always need plural verb. Therefore, you can eliminate A & C. Now you can eliminate D and E since it uses 'like'
