Can an Expert differntiate between the use of 'Like' and 'As'

This comparison is illogical, implying that GEORGE WASHINGTON is similar to THE VENERATION.

Here, the blue portion conveys the following meaning:
Mary FUNCTIONED AS LEADER of the student council.

B: As the...veneration, George Washington
Here, the red portion conveys the following meaning:
George Washington FUNCTIONED AS THE VENERATION.
This meaning is nonsensical.
Eliminate B.

In C, the referent for that is unclear.
Eliminate C.

In D, the referent for it is unclear.
Eliminate D.

The correct answer is E.
