Novex

by dkumar.83 » Sun Jun 27, 2010 11:05 am
Advertisement: For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex. So when you want the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the advertisement's argument?
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctor's prescription.
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.

I think C is the answer.
Conclusion that Novex is one of the most effective drugs comes from the fact that most hospitals use Novex for their patients. C says that it is not true. These hospitals are going for cost savings rather than for good quality.

I'm going with D. Here's why:
A - wrong... what if Novex cures sinus pain much more effectively?
B - this is out of scope.
C - out of scope: we don't know that Novex is one of these manufacturers. Further, what if Novex is more expensive than other sinus drugs because of cheaper manufacturer prices?
D - This makes sense... without a doctor's prescription, hospitals can easily administer Novex without having to bother doctors. This could explain why 3/4 hospitals use Novex and why Novex isn't necessarily the most effective painkiller.
E - Out of scope; if anything, this would strengthen the argument.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

Good explanation. Now we need the OA & OE?

B , The statement states that a painkiller becomes most effective when 75% of the hospitals administer their patients with it but it does not say how many patients are administered in each of the hospitals and in what situation. Option B clearly says that certain hospitals which normally do not administer Novex will do so only in exceptional cases i.e when a particular patient is unable to tolerate the usual painkiller. Hence, the advertisement could be misleading if this option is TRUE.

+1 for B.

Premise: 3/4 hospitals give their patients Novex painkillers

Conclusion: Novex is the most effective drug on the market.

If it were true that the hospitals were giving their patients novex only because the patients couldn't handle the other pain killers, this would mean that there are other more effective drugs, but novex was given only because the patients couldn't handle the BETTER drugs.
Is caught between a rock and a hard place!

(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.
Conclusion: Novex is the most effective painkiller for sinus pain.

Premise: 3 out of 4 hospital gives their patients Novex

Assumption: giving Novex = effective. The argument is connecting these two ideas. It assumes that if the hospitals give out Novex, the drug must be effective.

Predict how to weaken: Show that the hospitals give out Novex for another reason or that the drug isn't effective.

(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain. Outside the scope; the argument is only about Novex, not about other painkillers, and only about sinus pain, not about other kinds of pain. Also, avoid the word some in weaken questions. Some could mean as few as one.

(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use. Doesn't weaken enough. How many hospitals do not usually use Novex? No way to tell, so this answer could be discussing only a few hospitals, not enough to sufficiently weaken the conclusion.

(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford. Correct. This answer suggests another reason that the hospitals give out Novex: because it's cheap.

(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctor's prescription. Irrelevant. Doesn't tell us that Novex is not effective or that hospitals have another reason to give it out. Why would hospitals care whether a prescription is needed? That's what hospitals do: they write prescriptions.

(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex. Strengthens. This answer suggests that Novex is effective, the opposite of what we want.

The correct answer is C.

Hi GMATGuruNY,

For option no.3, how do we know that Novex is one of the drugs sold cheaply by the manufacturers. There is no reference to 'Novex' in this option.

The correct answer doesn't have to mention Novex by name; it only has to provide another reason that hospitals might give out Novex.

In fact, you should be skeptical of answer choices that reuse words from the passage. An incorrect answer choice often will include a term from the passage (such as "Novex") in order to make the answer choice more appealing.
