common symptoms of stomach flu

I wanted to know what is the difference in the two sentences
common symptoms of stomach flu are indigestion,vomitting and drinking less water than usual--wrong
common symptoms of stomach flu are indigestion,vomitting and decreased water intake--- correct

Please can someone shed light on these two examples why first one is wrong and second one is right

Standard noun > the noun + ing > noun + ing
Study > the studying > studying

** > means better than not greater than in the above sentences :P **

In this case standard noun is available to us hence is preferred.
