animal moves so infrequently that two species of algae grow on its coat and between its toes.

does this mean that
1) 2 species of algae grow on each its coat and between its toes i.e. total of 4 species
2) 1 species of algae grow on its coat and 1 between its legs

[spoiler]i think sentence means 2)
