Friedrich Miiller

by hemanth28 » Sun Jun 21, 2009 12:45 am
Spanning more than fifty years, Friedrich Miiller began his career in an unpromising apprenticeship as a
Sanskrit scholar and culminated in virtually every honor that European governments and learned societies
could bestow.

(A) Miiller began his career in an unpromising apprenticeship as
(B) Miiller's career began in an unpromising apprenticeship as
(C) Miiller's career began with the unpromising apprenticeship of being
(D) Miiller had begun his career with the unpromising apprenticeship of being
(E) the career of Miiller has begun with an unpromising apprenticeship of

whats wrong with C ??
A is having modifier error.D,E are out for the wrong tense usage. I thought began with is more idiomatic than began in. So i choose C even though this option is verbose.

I understand that being is less preferred , however "apprenticeship as" sounds weird to me. That is the reason why i chose C.

Also can you give some other examples where began in is used ?

IMO=B

Spanning more than fifty years, is referring to Miller's career, not the man Friedrich Miller. The idiom began in is correct than begin with.

IMO : B

being is almost everytime incorrect in GMAT.
also there is no problem with: 'apprenticeship as a sanskrit scholar'
