I eliminated A,B,C because they sounded more like passive.b/w D and E i chose E as i liked the as well as which joins the sentence rather than and which adds another example.

What and why is yours?

I'd go with B here.

(B) much of the local artisans' creative energy was
expended on the creation of Buddha images and
on construction and decoration of the temples in
which they were enshrined

To me this seems like the only option that's parallel.
Also, logically, "they" has a clear reference with Buddha images because that's the only plural item.

My problem with E is that it's not parallel:

"accounted for:
1 much of the local artisans' creative energy
2 construction and decoration of the

2 just isn't parallel to me.
