Marconi conceived of the radio was as a substitute for the telephone,a tool for private conversation;instead,it has become....In this sentence 'it' refers to Radio but doesn't 'it' may also refer to Telephone?Is the use of it clear here?Can anyone explain?

The sentence above clearly is contrasting how Marconi CONCEIVED OF the radio to what the radio HAS BECOME.
Thus, there is no ambiguity: it clearly refers to RADIO.
