about the verb rise

Good day,
in the idiom section of Manhattan SC page 166

we have
RIGHT: The rising of the prices always lift my spirit
wrong: a rising of prices at gas pump is hurting consumers

my question
is The rising of prices at gas pump is blalabla correct?

Hi Amadalia! You are correct! :)

The key is here is when "rising" is used as a noun it takes the article "the."

When using "rise," you have the option to use either "the" or "a."

So we could correct the wrong sentence as:

"A rise in prices at gas pumps is hurting consumers."

Does the make sense? I hope so! :)
