A newly discovered letter by Jonathan Swift, written in the same year as Gulliver's Travels were published, shows how the biting satire that marked many of Swift's public works was reflected in his public writings as well.

(A) A newly discovered letter by Jonathan Swift, written in the same year as Gulliver's Travels were published
(B) A newly discovered letter by Jonathan Swift, written in the same year of publication as Gulliver's Travels
(C) A newly discovered letter by Jonathan Swift, written in the same year that Gulliver's Travels was published
(D) Jonathan Swift wrote a newly discovered letter in the same year as he published Gulliver's Travels that
(E) Jonathan Swift wrote a newly discovered letter in the same year of publication as Gulliver's Travels that

I could narrow down the choices to B and C . But stuck after that

In B, the wording "in the same year of publication" makes it sound like the letter was also published. Since it was newly discovered, that doesn't make sense.

"in the same year that Gulliver's Travels was published" clearly means that only Gulliver's Travels was published.

In my knowledge In B it seems that ,
A letter was written in the same year as publication( year ) of Gulliver's travels . how could it sound that the letter was also published . prep phrase (in the same year as publication clearly modifies the verb was written ) . When it was written ? In the same year of publication of the Gulliver's travels.

Kindly help. I am not able to understand till now

I'm no expert but I think the keyword was 'was' published that made C the clear answer, I believe it matches with the word published in the stem of the sentence. Both are past tense!

You can read it either way, which is why C is a better option. It eliminates the ambiguity.

Hi Rajiv Shukla,

You try posting these questions in the Admissions Forum (on this site). You're more likely to receive some advice in THAT Forum. Right now, you're in the Sentence Correction Sub-Forum.
