Punctuation question...

by [email protected] » Wed Apr 04, 2012 10:37 pm
In his laws of motion, which now form the core of classical mechanics, Isaac Newton clearly and concisely introduced three important physical ideas: the concept of inertia, the relationship between force and acceleration, and the coupled nature of forces.

A] three important physical ideas: the concept of inertia, the relationship between force and acceleration, and the coupled nature of forces

B] three important physical ideas; the concept of inertia, the relationship between force and acceleration, and that forces were coupled in nature

C] three important physical ideas; the concept of inertia, force and acceleration were related, and the coupled nature of forces.

D] three important physical ideas, the concept of inertia, the relationship between force and acceleration, and he also introduced the coupled nature of forces.

E] three important ideas that were physical in nature: the concept of inertia, the relationship between force and acceleration, and the coupled nature of forces.
The OA is A itself...
quite an easy question, something that you see in regular English...

E can be chosen but option E is wordy and not concise to use 'that were physical in nature'.

A colon is used when identifying objects or listing things. It makes things more clear and easy to define...\

I hope this question helps to learn something from the other pattern of the GMAT...

The answer should in fact be A :)

When you are listing some stuff and separating them with commas you have to make sure that those stuff are of the same type.

B)change is from : to ;. The : is perfectly fine. So B is eliminated.
C)"force and acc. were related" is wrong here. It should be "the relationship between force and acc ... " (i.e. always list stuff of the same type)
D)change is from : to ,. Again wrong. It should be :
E)"that were physical in nature" is added. Why? Original sentence does not have this. You should not add something like this in GMAT. E is wrong as well.

Solution is A. (i.e. there was nothing wrong with the sentence to begin with :))

EDIT: i forgot "with" :P

: is must and A beats E.

IMO: A

As you said, adding "in nature" doesn't add meaning to the sentence, so we certainly don't need to make the sentence any longer than it already is.
