If anyone calls while we are in conference, tell them that I will return their call after the meeting.

B. him or her that I will return their call after the meeting.
C. them that I would return their call after the meeting.
D. the person that I will return the call after the meeting.
E. him or her that I would return the call after the meeting is over.
OA: D
IMO: B
I quite confused about this problem. Will appreciate if anyone can explain clearly.

Here, the main issue is the pronoun.

Anyone ==singular
so, any pronoun that should be used in the later part MUST have clear reference.

All the options that have "them" or "their" are not correct because "anyone" cannot be referred by "them" or "their".
--> This kills A, B, and C.

E is wrong for the wrong use of "If X happens, Y will happen"

If "if clause" is in present tense, the next clause MUST be in future tense. In E, "would" is not correct.

Answer is D.

Another reason why E is incorrect - after the meeting is over. Here is over is redundant because of presence of after.

E.g. I'll see you after lunch - Correct.
I'll see you after lunch is over - Redundancy.
