Same score all 3 times!

by yallic » Fri Sep 06, 2013 10:33 am
Hi,

I've taken the GMAT for the third time this week, and I really don't know how I managed to do this - but in all 3 tests I got exactly the same score - 640:
  • First time: Q44, V35
    Second time: Q47, V32
    Third: Q44, V32
So for the first time I took the test, all the scores I got on the GMATPrep and other practice exams were around 640. But in the second and third time, I got scores of 690-710 (always with a 48-49 score in the quantitative section).

I feel hopeless and frustrated and really don't know what to do next. I want to apply into one of the top 10 business schools, and I know that 640 won't do it...
On the other hand - doesn't it look bad that I get the same score all the time?
Do you have any recommendations for me?

Thank you!

Hi yallic,

Your situation is not unique, and a 640 is a solid score, so you shouldn't get too down on yourself. That score might be enough to get you into a Top-10 school, but it would be at the lower end of the range for any of those schools. Business Schools don't really care if you retake the GMAT, but if you're planning to retest, you're going to have to make some adjustments and pick up those missing points.

I have some ideas about your situation, but If you can answer a couple of quick questions, then I'll be happy to offer some additional advice:

1) What practice materials have you been working with?
2) When did you take your 3 Official GMATs
3) Did you ever retake any of your practice CATs (for example, did you take either of the 2 CATs from mba.com more than once)?

Hi,
First of all - thanks for answering me.

Regarding your questions:
1. I've taken a Gmat curse from a leading company in my country (I'm not from the states) so I had questions and materials from them, had the official books, and had the Kaplan materials as well.
2. I took the first Gmat exam in April, then I took the second one a month later (around may). After that I was very disappointed so I didn't touch the materials for 2-3 month, and before the last one (that I took last week) I've learned for a month.
3. From the Kaplan CATs I only had 2 exams retaken (but the first time I took them was around March and the second time was last week), where in the GMAT prep I took each exam only once before each round.

Thanks!
