Want to improve from a 600

by cmcneil81 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:59 am
I took the GMAT yesterday after studying for about 3 months and I got a 600 42(Q) and 31(V). I am going to take the test again in about 3 weeks and was wondering what I could do to improve my score.

Prior to taking the test I read and answered all the questions in the OG, did most of the Kaplan 2009 GMAT book, and took several practice exams(mostly Kaplan). To improve my score I have already bought the Princeton Review for verbal and am going to spend time reading books with better grammar.

What other strategies could help improve my score? I really enjoy working math problems and reducing the amount of time spent on each problem might also help. What other practice test software packages are out there? I didnt really like the format of the Kaplan practice tests, but what about 800score? Are their guides very helpful?

Any help that you could provide would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

It would be more helpful if you detailed your previous study plan so we can evaluate it and provide changes to adjust for your goals. As far as materials go, I think you should consider picking up the OG Q and V books for more official practice questions and maybe the MGMAT verbal guides particularly the SC book. If you really enjoy Q you can continue working on it to improve that 42 score, but if you can raise that 31 V up then you will see your score improve more rapidly.

I agree with the above - pick up the OG quant and verbal supplements. They are excellent additional practice. Since you enjoy math problems, I'd focus on working some of the harder questions and trying to find the "trick" to each one. You're scoring pretty well in quant but if you enjoy it, it's easier to improve.

Also, it would be helpful to know where you started. Did you start at a 450 and improve to 600? If so, chances are you were studying properly, you just ran out of time or hit your personal wall. Or, did you not improve at all? If so, you need to change your approach.
