federal legislators

Doctor: Research shows that adolescents who play video games on a regular basis are three times as likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome as are adolescents who do not play video games. Federal legislation that prohibits the sale of video games to minors would help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents.

The doctor's conclusion depends on which of the following assumptions?

a. The majority of federal legislators would vote for a bill that prohibits the sale of video games to minors.
b. Not all adolescents who play video games on a regular basis suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.
c. Playing video games is the only way an adolescent can develop carpal tunnel syndrome.
d. Most parents would refuse to purchase video games for their adolescent children.
e. The regular playing of video games by adolescents does not produce such beneficial effects as better hand-eye coordination and improved reaction time.

To drive directky into conclusion that prohibiting sales of videogames will clearly help curb this painful wrist condition among adolescents, doctor should assume that this is the only way for adolescent to develop this sindrome. So answer C should be the correct one.

C is wrong. Answer should be D. This has been solved before, do a search on the forum.

Should be D.
Either children should themselves buy - Legislation would ban this.

Or parents should buy for the children - If this does not happen , the legislation will be a success.

A-The decision is already made by federal legislators. Or, it is restatement, not an assumption. Nix out.

B-It is out of scope since we do zero in on adolescents who are likely to suffer CTS. Out.

C-It's too extreme and we are not sure if it is the only factor that adolescents suffer CTS.

D-Bull's eye. Federal legislators ban video sales and this is it!

E-Irrelevant.

Hope it helps.

Because the question asks for an assumption on which the argument depends, you can simply ask whether the conclusion depends on choice d. Does the conclusion depend on it? Well, without choice d(that is if parents would buy videogames for the kids, then the argument that the legislation would curb the problem falls apart.
