570 (41Q,28V)

by shibal » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:28 am
Hey guys, is with great sadness that I'm going to share my experience this morning.

A 570 (41Q,28V) really knocked me down.... But live goes on.... When I pressed the "See your Score" button I was so confident of getting al least a 650 that when I saw a 570, I wanted to cry like a baby...

I got there really early, there were two other girls (one of them pretty hot...) already waiting. One of the center's worker gave me some instructions and said that at 8AM we were going to start.

I had never done an essay for the gmat before, however I thought it was really easy. I'm used to write reports in English at the bank, so that really helped me. I Had enough time to write and develop my ideas in both of the essays. Took a break and was ready to do some math. I think I'll get at least a 5.0....

Math: My first question was a weird inequality, and I think I got it wrong... That really killed me... But as time passed by questions were popping out and I was able to get several right. By question 20 I got a combination question, which is a good sign that you are achieving a 600 lvl. To tell you the truth only in a DS question I guessed, all of the other ones I had done and I was more than sure to be right. So when I finished I was really confident and moved on to Verbal, which in all my practices exams ranged from a 35 to 40.

At the beginning Verbal was simple, easy RC and SC, but latter a gigantic text about sand, colors and a bunch of useless things came up. That probably broke my legs. I lost a lot of time and maybe got one or two questions wrong. I thing I faced one or two tough RC, but in general I think the test was easy.

After answering all the 41 Verbal questions, moved on to the survey and the rest you already know....

I really don't know what to do. I'm sitting at my workspace just thinking what to do.... Have tons of things to deliver but I seriously don't have enough energy, I have a terrible headache....

Another thing that is really killing me is that I called my parents after the test and I think they are more disappointed than me, maybe because I have worked so hard for the gmat that they could bet all their money that I was going to have a good score. They said they had never told me to stop studying... It was always the opposite, stop playing and/or partying and go to study....

I want to apply during the 1st trial but don't know what to do. I studied for 4 months all by myself, did several CATs and my lowest score ever was a 630... I'm planning to retake it in September, to have time to apply on October, but I'd really appreciate your comments on what to do, how to identify my weakness and anything else you think I should know... Even if it's that I'm stupid....

Best Regards

C'mon pick yourself up :) Life is not over and things are not soo bad. You are already half the way to the desired destination.

Your Quantitative score is great! Now all you have to do is deal with your fear of Verbal (I can tell you have a fear of verbal from the way you describe reading comprehension) - so funny how some people can be natural at verbal and poor at quant and vice-versa. That said, you can definitely improve your verbal score by first doing the following

1. Repeat to yourself that 'Verbal is not difficult'. You just need to get used to it
2. If English is not your first language then start poring over English based texts such as The Economist (www.economist.com) & National Geographic (www.ngm.com)
3. Purchase the Manhattan GMAT verbal guides (for Sentence Correction & RC) and Powerscore for Critical Reasoning
4. Come back here in September/October/November and tell us how you got a 720+ (with your math you can do it, if you work diligently in your Verbal)

ogbeni, thanks for your post.

to tell you the truth, even though English is not my mother tongue I studied my entire life in an american school. did elementary, middle and high school. Had above avg SAT scores and I always planned to do college in the states. however after 9/11 I kind of changed my mind and decided to stay in brazil. so I think it's unacceptable to have such a low grade in the Verbal section. Also, it's funny that I had never know any grammar rule before studying for the gmat. at school we learn how to due calculus, biology, history and other subjects...

hope to be here again in sept saying how I got a 680+!!!!

I took the GMAT this past weekend and I didn't do as well as I had hoped. I, too, studied for a number of months. I also missed the first math question, and got tense from there on out. I know that I can do better, and I will. I have a strong feeling that you can do the same. Keep your freaking head up and destroy it next time!

Best,
Paul

Shibal. I have been following many of your posts and have learnt a lot from your opinions and solutions for several problems on this forum.
You have the ability to easily best the gmat.
Please consider this a bad dream and try to get over it. Take a break from gmat for sometime and get back fuming ready to beat the gmat. You can and am sure you will..

Shibal - From reading your post, you said you never practiced the AWA essays before? Did you do them on your practice tests? If not, you probably just got fatigued during the verbal....

Just a guess - but I have always been told to do the AWA essays to build up stamina.

Good Luck next time around.

JeffB to tell you the truth I didn't get tired by doing the AWA section. I wrote about 30 sentences among the 5 paragraphs. I read both of them twice before pressing ok.....

thanks for all the support guys... I'll be trying to provide insights from the exercises you post and help each one of you in our journey....

you mention the girl was pretty hot, so i think she was probably an integral part of your gmat xperience. do you think she broke your concentration?

thats very very demotivational man..I have been following your answers AND the questions you posted. I had a feeling that you would score 750+ because your questions were always tricky and I thought you are over the 600-700 level questions.

Honestly, i think it was just not your day. Things went wrong from the first question. I honestly believe that you deserve a much better score.
Don't even think about it, try again and this time give it your best.

I am taking the test in 2 days and I guess I shouldn't have read this.
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

common man, I'm sur you'll do fine... just relax and try to think positive. I've decided to take this week off and rest a little before doing it all over again... I want to see your thread on thursday about how well you did....

oh well, I don't think that triggered a bad score, but I was so concentrated on the gmat that I forget to ask for her cellphone number!!!!

I'm pretty sure you could've gotten a 48 quant with the way you're answering those quant questions in this forum  But keep on trying man. You'll eventually get the score you want in both verbal and quant.

THE GMAT IS NOT AN IQ TEST!!!!

I see too many people on this forum claiming to be stupid because they can not achieve a particular score on the GMAT. There are so many factors that go into a GMAT score other than raw intelligence.

Perhaps the most overlooked factor is LUCK! Yes I said it. Remember that the GMAT claims to have a standard deviation of 30 (which in my opinion is virtually impossible to prove and is probably much higher). This means that if your true "test taking" ability is 700, you will score between a 670 and 730. This means that someone can take the GMAT and get a 670 one day and take it again the very next day and get a 730.

This is the exact reason schools present GMAT ranges and claim that a GMAT will almost never disqualify a student for a particular program.

With that being said, there are certainly many other skills that may be acquired to lower a test taker's variance. I would say that your biggest flaw is putting too much pressure on yourself to do well on this test. I'm not sure if there is any simple anecdote to ridding yourself of this pressure besides realizing that you can take the GMAT as many times as necessary and the school only considers your top score. So when you do take the test next time, remember that if it does not work out you can always take it again.

I agree with Mike that GMAT is not a measure of your intelligence. First time I took the GMAT after 2 weekends of studying I thought that I'd do well because I have always had good GPA and considered myself bright. I took the test and when I saw 420 on the screen I thought that it was applaud. After studying for 4 months and taking several practice tests, where my avg. scores were about 600, I felt confident that I would do well. On the morning of the test the lady who worked at the test center was so incompetent that, I had to re-enter my information 3 times and had to go through the picture taking process as many times that after the second time she said that something was wrong, I was so upset and in addition to being nervous it aggravated me so much that I almost left. I took the test for the 2nd time and got 560 (which was good enough for the school that I wanted to go to). Although I was still unhappy because I thought I should have gotten better regardless that pretest inconveniences. It's my belief that anyone with some intelligence and by following advice about what to study can achieve a good score.

Don't give UP, you might surprise yourself.
