test B

by nationalfuel » Tue Jul 08, 2008 10:35 am
The upcoming presidential election in the West African republic of Ganelon is of grave concern to the U.S. State Department. Ganelon presently has strong political and military ties to the United States. However, the Socialist party is widely expected to win the election, leading to fears that Ganelon will soon break away from the pro-American bloc and adopt a nonaligned or openly anti-American stance.
Which of the following is an assumption made in the passage above?
(A) A Socialist party government in Ganelon is more likely to oppose the United States than is a non-Socialist party government.
(B) The people of the United States recognize their nation’s interest in the political stability of West Africa.
(C) A weakening of U.S. political ties with Ganelon could have serious consequences for U.S. relations with other African nations.
(D) The Socialist party leaders in Ganelon believe that their nation’s interests would best be served by an alliance with anti-American forces.
(E) The Socialist party will win the upcoming election in Ganelon.

My ans is D. What's the OA?

Here's how I came up with an assumption:
Strategy used: first break the passage into Premise and conclusion and then find the missing correlation between premise and conclusion:
P : The upcoming presidential election in the West African republic of Ganelon is of grave concern to the U.S.
P: Ganelon has strong political and military ties to the US
P: Socialist party is widely expected to win the election
C: Ganelon will soon break away from the pro-American bloc and adopt a nonaligned or openly anti-American stance

Now look at the missing link between Premise and conclusion... here missing link has somethign to do with Socialist party. If Socialist party wins then Ganelon will soon break away from pro - American bloc means that Socialist party believe in an alliance with anti-american.

Hi, I think A is the right assumption. Answer choice D has lot of information about Socialist party leaders that we have no information about. The logical gap between Socialist party winning the election and Ganelon will soon break away from the pro-American bloc is what we have to assume here. The assumption is there - socialist party is more likely to oppose the United States and hence, A.

What is OA?

I too was debating over A and D... but later changed my ans from A to D since the passage mentions abt adoption of anti-american stance but does not talk abt opposition.

Had the mention of adopt anti-american stance not there then A fits in well - this is my understanding.

Any more explanations? Pls. post OA?

What's wrong with E ?
If the Socialist party, which causes concerns will not win, then the US doesn't have to worry it.

I also agree with A, but pls reject the E.
