MBA After 8 years to switch career!!

by vinnakota5 » Sun Jan 23, 2011 8:33 pm
Dear Friends,

I am Murthy from Chennai. I am a Mechanical Engineer with 8 years of work experience in assessing the automobile materials hazardous compliance. My field is very narrow and esp. in India it has got very limited opportunities. I would like to switch over my career to Finance by doing MBA. I am preparing for GMAT. Some of my friends told that, switching career after 8 years is difficult even if one does MBA. Is it correct? Does MBA not open gates for shifting of my career? Please advice.

Many thanks in advance.

Best Regards
Murthy

Hello, Murthy,

The MBA can be a valuable tool in switching careers - it can greatly facilitate the process. And many MBA students are indeed changing careers. However, the MBA is NOT a "magic wand" that simply transforms you from one career into another just by going through the program.

If you are changing careers, the burden is on you in your application to make a credible case for the career change - not so much focus on why you don't like your current career but more importantly why you want the new career - and, most importantly, how you know this is the right path for you. In other words, you have to demonstrate knowledge of your new field, and that you are making a well informed decision to pursue it. Also you have to build a bridge between your current and your new career - aside from the MBA, what skills and knowledge are transferable?

Last but not least, the adcoms are always concerned about your employability for internships and post-MBA jobs. Even if they understand and like your goals and your candidacy overall, if they doubt you can get a job in your target field, it could result in a ding. So also try to show in your application how and why you would be employable in your new field.
