Profile evaluation -10 yrs IT

by mbacruise » Wed Feb 23, 2011 5:58 am
Hi, I am a software engg with 10 yrs experience, somehow decided late on doing an MBA.

Took GMAT yesterday and scored a 730(Q49, V40).

Undergrad (electronics engineering) from an Indian University - GPA- 2.4/4
Post grad from a Premier Indian Institute (IIT - medical electronics) - 2.8/4

Am working as a team leader for the past 3-4 years ... have been in the US for 3 years on Job assignments.
Extra curriculars are nothing special, some basic sport certis and little organizing here and there.

Please evaluate my profile and let me know what you think about it in terms of my shot at the top mba colleges..
Also, as I am serious about building my profile now, any suggestions on how to improve it are welcome.

Just to add, this was my second GMAT attempt, earlier attempt in Jan last yr yielded a 710/5.5.

Thanks,
mbacruise

mbacruise,

Given your age, demographic, and nonsensational extracurriculars, I think your best bet would be schools like CMU Tepper, Texas, UNC, Indiana, Emory, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, BYU etc. -- all of which are fine programs. Any leadership you can add at or outside of work would strengthen your profile.

Good luck,

mbacruise,

You have a typical profile of Indian/IT/Male applicant and this demographic is over represented in the business schools application process, making the application process even more competitive for you. Your candidacy will be compared with the rest of the Indian/IT/Male pool because at the end the business schools will have to pick only a few of all the candidates that are applying from this profile and hence, it gets super selective. Also, it seems that your extracurriculars are weak. You will need to show strong and consistent leadership skills and initiatives not just in your work resume but also outside work activities, and should start building them from right now. Overall, your key challenge will be to differentiate your application from the thousands of other IT applicants. Well execution of your application will be critical to translate the real strengths of your profile in your application because at the end of the day, admissions committee members will look at those piece of papers to make judgments.

Also, your work experience is on the higher side than the average work exp of incoming students. While the more than average work exp in itself is not a problem, it will be even more critical for you to explain why is this the right time for a full time MBA, and not 4-5 years back, or a part time/accelerated or 1 y/executive program? As far as school selection is concerned, your target schools to apply for should be based on what are your post MBA goals. You may want to look at this post on how to select the target business schools.

Good luck!

Thanks Paul and Bizschoolprep..appreciate your responses.

I forgot to mention that I am planning to take up a 1-year full time MBA course as I don't want to be away from work for two full years (given my personal responsibilities)...

Does that change the target schools for me .. ? and do I realistically have a shot at the top 1-yr MBA programs with my profile?

I know my GMAT score is not that great, neither are my acads or EC .... but I am willing to work on building my profile in a focussed manner ..

Thanks!

mbacruise,

It depends on which one-year programs you have in mind. They are not significantly easier to get into than full-time programs.
