Cost of higher education

by annakool1009 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:14 am
Most of Portugal’s 250,000 university students boycotted classes in a one-day strike to protest a law that requires them to contribute $330 a year toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year.

A. year toward the cost of higher education, previously paying $7 per year
B. year toward the cost of higher education, for which was previously paid $7 per year
C. year, compared to the previously $7 per year, toward the cost of higher education
D. year toward the cost of higher education, instead of the $7 per year required previously
E. year as opposed to the $7 per year required previously for the cost of higher education
Gearing up for the D-day.

I am confused between C and E but I think C is wrong because instead of "toward" it should be "towards".
Then E is the next best choice

IMO D is the correct answer.

A: education, previously paying $7 a year
B: for which was previously pad
C: Compared to is wrong idiom in this context
E: for the cost of higher education is placed incorrectly

shouldnt the correct answer option read "towards" instead of "toward" ? (else refrain from using the word)

I dont think there is any difference between "toward" and "towards"...both can be used here...

I too picked C.....but not sure...why E is more appropriate here....

D is the correct answer.

As in E, "opposed to " is not appropriate here....because nothing is opposed....$7 is not opposing $338, rather only replacing it.
i.e, instead of X , y is required now.

Problem with C (which i previously thought as the right answer ) is that "compared to " is not the correct idiom " compared with " would have been more appropriate. Also, the adverd "previously" wrongly modifies "$7"
