Nobody knows exactly how many languages there are in the world, partly because of
the difficulty of distinguishing between a language and the sub-languages or dialects
within it, but those who have tried to count typically have found about five thousand.

Is usage of within it correct???
Hi!

I've bolded the part of the sentence relevant to your question.

Since we have "a language" in the non-underlined part, "within it" is correct.

Also, it's idiomatically correct to say "a dialect within a language", if that's your main question. You could also say "a dialect of a language", but you wouldn't say "the sub-languages of", you'd definitely say "the sub-languages within".
