SC - comparison!

17. In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly twice as fast as the 1970’s.
(A) twice as fast as
(B) twice as fast as it was in
(C) twice what it was in
(D) two times faster than that of
(E) two times greater than

answer:C.

Why B is wrong. In B, "it" refers to "the rate".

I hate comparison!!!

I think the word increase and fast have same meaning in this sentence so they can't come together.

Its not just the increase and fast. But the rate of increase and fast which are redundant.

Take it this way:
If the rate is twice, it is implicit that it is fast.
If the rate is halved, it is implicit that it is slow.

So no need to convey the same thing using two ideas: fast and rate of increase is twice.

So u mean the rate should not be fast. Instead, increase fast?
But why C? what is th e role of "what" in C.

C is the only answer choice which is comparing the rate of increase in the 1080 to the rate of increase in 1970's.
