600-700 level assumptions

by thephoenix » Mon Feb 01, 2010 1:49 am
Recent research has indicated that married people are not only happier than unmarried people, but also healthier. This study has been widely reported by the media, with most commentators concluding that being married is good for one's health and attitude.

The conclusion of the media commentators depends on which of the following assumptions?
a)The longer people are married, the happier and healthier they become.
b)Married couples who had a large, extravagant wedding are happier than those who had a small, simple ceremony.
c)Married people cannot get depressed.
d)Single people with depression or health problems are just as likely to get married as are other single people.
e)Some marriages are more harmonious than others.

i have no clue for this

IMO C.

The commentators say that if your are married , you could be healthier. Now C introduces a alternate scenario where Marriage could dampen the health.

Let us try to negate C. What if Marriage people get depressed. Then their health may deteriorate. So we cannot say Married people are healthier.

To make the commentators conclusion logical they have to assume Married people cannot get depressed.

Giorgio said he goes for D.Actually it tries to weaken the conclusion but still it has some sufficient & necessary conditions conflict.

Am i right ??

Recent research has indicated that married people are not only happier than unmarried people, but also healthier. This study has been widely reported by the media, with most commentators concluding that being married is good for one's health and attitude.

The conclusion of the media commentators depends on which of the following assumptions?
a)The longer people are married, the happier and healthier they become.
Incorrect : Duration of marriage would not fill a gap in the premise.

b)Married couples who had a large, extravagant wedding are happier than those who had a small, simple ceremony.
Incorrect : The conclusion that being married is good for one's health and attitude cannot be drawn from
from the size of the wedding.

c)Married people cannot get depressed.
Incorrect : Out of scope. Issue is not about psychological health or physical health. It is about health in general.

d)Single people with depression or health problems are just as likely to get married as are other single people.
Correct : This one fills a gap in the premise. If we negate this answer choice - Single ppl with depression or health problems are notas likely to get married as other single people - it destroys the argument completely.

e)Some marriages are more harmonious than others.
Incorrect : Irrelevant.
