City council .....

by AIM GMAT » Fri Mar 25, 2011 2:47 am
Because city council members in small towns are intimately acquainted with the public they serve, they clearly have a more difficult job than city council members in larger cities.

The conclusion above rests on which of the following assumptions?

A. Working directly with members of the public is the one of the most challenging aspects of serving on a city council.
B. Managing the affairs of a large city requires a more significant time commitment than working directly with the public.
C. City council members in small towns are often related to a certain percentage of the population, making them intimately acquainted with the people they serve.
D. Residents of small towns often attend city council meetings to present their concerns.
E. City council members in large cities rarely engage the public directly

Yes very true... this is very tricky.. it is known battle btw c and e but these are the reasons I chose E to C

I am a village bank manager and I have friend in urban branch where my cheif sits too...
---I was asked to work intimately with villagers by my cheif (because villagers have little knowledge on internet services)
My urban branch buddy and I will provide the same banking provisions to all people.
I only explain to villagers more and my buddy urban manager does not have to do the same to educated people

Now to question : Am I putting more effort than my buddy??

1. Small town city councils are close to the public
2. This makes the job more difficult than large town city councils

Immediately the thing that should jump into your mind is that large towns must not be close to the public.

A. Incorrect. While this may be true it does not serve to strengthen the conclusion, which is that there is a difference between small and large towns.

B. Incorrect. While that could be a reason why they are not involved with the public it does not mean they do not work with the public.

C. Incorrect. We already know they are acquainted from the passage. How they are acquainted is unimportant.

D. Incorrect. Tells us nothing about what the residents in large towns do.

E. Correct. This tells us that the large town councils do not engage the public. Since working closely with the public makes the job more difficult the large towns job must be easier since they avoid doing it.
