MBA Program Deliemma

by hardikrs » Tue Jul 01, 2008 12:13 pm
Group please share your inputs -----

1.) Since I am a working professional, I am leaning towards a part time MBA, any potential down side of a part time compared to a full time, especially when I am planning to switch careers.

2.) I am an Industrial engineer planning to switch career and get in Investment banking, is MBA the right direction? I have 3+ years of experience.

I would really appreciate if anybody can share their experience/thoughts on this matter.

Thank you.

Dear hardikrs,

If you want to make a big career change as you post, then you really should be in a full-time program. You need the internship and other networking/recruiting opportunities to have the best chance at making the change. The MBA is one way (and usually the best way) to transition from engineering to business.

Good luck,
Lisa

Thank you very much for your input....but my situation is little different and aplogise for not mentioning this earlier....

I am trying to have my current employer pay for my MBA and while I go to school, I may do some projects and work closely with the Financial department...will that count as experience...if I have to apply to wall street investment banking companies.

Thanks again.

Most investment banks focus on students in full-time programs. It is imperative you have the time to visit New York and attend any recruiting events on campus in order to have a chance at getting a position at a bank. Investment banks have structured, traditional MBA recruiting programs, and so it is more difficult to transition to that career outside of their full-time MBA hiring.

Most students in part-time programs have a difficult time making a career change upon graduation as they do not have the time to devote to the career search between school and work. Likewise, part-time students do not always have the same access to the career center as full-time students, or might be required to get permission from their employers if the employer is paying for any part of the MBA program. In the event you decide to do a part-time program, you should probably adjust your expectations to making the career change after you complete the MBA not upon graduation from the MBA.

Lisa
