Dear MBA community,

I am applying to Haas (R3) and Fuqua (R2) to start Fall '11. However, I'm starting to wonder if I'm putting too many eggs in these baskets, as I was rejected from SoM and GSB R1. I'm also applying to a number of MPPs (Kennedy, SIPA, SAIS, Wilson, UCSD), but I am at this stage leaning more towards MBAs and Haas would be my top pick. Should I be applying to more MBA schools?

I am interested in a social enterprise/non-profit management focus, and that is why I've chosen the four MBA programs that I've applied to. They are all strong on social sector.

I have a BA in political science from a big state school, 3.82GPA, 1410 GRE, am taking the GMAT on Wednesday but should be around 700, quants been around 70th percentile and verbal 95th on practice MGMAT CATs. Four years of work experience: two with a humanitarian agency in DC, two with an education NGO in Beijing. Have a start-up social enterprise training venture in Beijing. Proficient Mandarin, strong international (China) experience. My essays are social mission-centric, with a strong logical flow of work building upon the original inspiration. What do you think my chances are at Haas and Fuqua? Any other programs that you'd recommend applying to?

Thanks!

I can't peer into the mind of the admissions folks, but your profile sounds similar to some of my class mates (currently FY at Fuqua). For example, one of my ILE team mates started his own micro finance org in Guatemala. CASE is definitely a strong center at Fuqua, though it sounds like you know that from your research! I think for Fuqua reco's help (I had an alumni letter in addition to the application, from a former mentor; that also waived the application fee...) I know the deadlines are looming and this post is somewhat late; if you end up visiting for interviews and/or need connections to Net Impact folks etc, let me know!

Thanks a lot SV. I know a good bit about CASE and had an excellent chat with one of the NI folks at your school, Joanna. I should be good from here.

For anyone who is interested, I'm also applying to NYU Stern, which has a very strong social enterprise focus as well.

Thanks again,
MH

Hi itslateagain_7,

You have a strong application, but depending on whether you know you want to attend business school right away, you may want to apply to more programs. As an example, at some investment banks analysts are expected to pursue business school after 2 years, so it's not recommended that they only apply to 1 or 2 schools. This will be different for you if you are happy waiting an additional year.

I hope this was of help.

Best,
