by Dean Jones » Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:16 am
Dear Friends,

I was having problems in answering the following question.

Several financial officers of the company spoke on condition that they not be named
in the press reports.

A. that they not be named
B. that their names will not be used
C. that their names are not used
D. of not having their names
E. of not naming them

Please help.

OA after some discussions.

My choice was option C

Regards
Deano.

C - use of SIMPLE PRESENT (ARE) not in line with PAST (SPOKE). Same problem with B.
E - use of THEM not correct (requires THEIR).

Though IMO A is correct (thinking that sentence requires subjunctive), I am looking for a reason to drop D - could you share why you didnot pick D.

we do not know whether they will actually be named or not so Subjunctive mood - eliminate D/E
B/C - as explained by the above user :)

IMO A.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.
