(a)
(b) One in five Americans working shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for elderly relative saves
(c) The one in five Americans who work shorter hours at a job in order to provide care for an elderly relative saves
(d) Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save
(e) Providing care for an elderly relative, approximately one-fifth of all American employees work shorter hours at a job and it saves
OA: A/D
This is a controversial Sentence. It has been discussed earlier in 2008.

Experts, please explain.

the answer cant be A because the subject is ONE in five americans.... save ( should be saves) and their job is a bit unclear for me
i am confused between B and D but dislike "their job" much thus chose D
what is the answer?

"Those" is a demonstrative, and refers to specific people just like C with "the", thus I eliminate both base on those. I don't think this sentence should use definite articles or demonstrative, which represents a specific person or group, but rather use indefinite or none by using the expression "one in five".

For me it's either A or B, and it comes down to subject/verb agreement, which I am not confident with the "one in five"...However, I noticed another minor detail, maybe a typo, that in B the indefinite article is removed and thus making "elderly relative" an incorrect non-formal noun. Please correct me if I am wrong on the articles.

Answer should be D

A changes the meaning and it has S-V error. It says One american out of five, means the subject is one and pronoun is 'their'. This is an error with A.

(a)
(b) One in five Americans working shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for elderly relative saves - Same as A. S-V error
(c) The one in five Americans who work shorter hours at a job in order to provide care for an elderly relative saves - 'The One' talks about specific person
(d) Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save - Correct
(e) Providing care for an elderly relative, approximately one-fifth of all American employees work shorter hours at a job and it saves - Horrible. 'It' does not have clear refereance

A. 1/5 is plural. I have no problem with that. D is not concise.

I don't think B is a typo.

To provide better care for kids, the school....
nothing wrong with that.

"kids" are plural, and that's indefinite. On the other hand:

To provide better care for "kid", the school....

Does it sound wrong now? My understanding is that noun should have a determiner preceding it.

Option A is not correct.

The phrase "One in [plural number] always take a singular verb.
