IMO E

It should be "Characterized by damage".Disease is singular and it should be "is".

is correct, are wrong

B, E remains

B : characterized by cartilage and bone that become damaged
E : characterized by damaged X <cartilage and bone >

E is better as the disease is characterized by damaged <X>
