Low gpa problem

by gokce123 » Sat Jun 20, 2009 3:09 am
Hi stacy,

I am suffering with my low gpa it is about 2.4 from top school. I am an international candidate from Turkey and next year i am thinking of applying business schools like harvard stanford and london business school. My questions are

1-) With this kind of gpa is it impossible to enter these schools, is it end of the way even if you have a good gmat good experiences etc.?Because i saw that harvard average gpa is around 3.66 and they are saying that no gpa cutoff, but it seems that it is too hard. The commitee in these schools looking for at least 2.8 for example or as they are saying there is no cut off in their minds?
2-) Does Gmat around 750 really help to mitigate my low gpa ?
3-) Have you ever heard an international candidate with gpa 2.4 entering Stanford Harvard etc.?Can Good application process bring harvard admit with 2.4 gpa?
4-)Does the committee considering candidates with their own region candidates?GMATS gpas etc?

Ineed The real facts about this topic stacy.
Thank you in advance
Gokce

Harvard had 8600 applicants last year and only selected 12% of them?

I think you're aiming a little high. But good luck!

jeff you are saying little chances but i think mba program much more different than law or engineering degree.gpa is just one criteria.of course it is hard to enter harvard because it is harvard but i am just asking if i am in strong side in other factors such as gmat work exp leadership master degree summer schools etc. Can i be competitive with this poor undgrdate gpa in top 10?

Do not listen to JeffB, he does not know what he is talking about. As Gocke said, MBA programs are different than other graduate degrees. You will definitely need a high GMAT and an alternative transcript of quantitative classes and get straight As. From what I understand, GPA/GMAT is a way of disqualifying you rather than accepting you. Hence, work experience, LORs, essays are more important. And get invovled in extra curriculars.

I read a post online of a guy who got a 2.24 at UNC and ending up going to Stanford (he went back to school and got a 2 year degree with 4.0). I'm not saying that it is going to be easy, but it most certainly can be done.

P.S.
I'm in the same spot as you (2.24 GPA/ 710 GMAT) so I have researched it considerably and asked admissions consultants online and it is always the same answer, it is hard but doable. However, remember that Harvard is difficult to get into with a 4.0 and 750 GMAT.

hehe

All I was trying to say -- it's tough to get accepted -- even if you have a great app, it's just going to be even tougher with a really low GPA.

Of course, anything is possible.

Good Luck.

Great discussion! To go back to the original post, the answer is your GPA alone is not enough to result in a rejection. However, you do need to mitigate the low GPA with the rest of your application like a high GMAT, well-written essays, glowing recommendations and a strong interview. It is tough for any applicant to receive an offer of admission from Harvard, Stanford and LBS--they are some of the most selective schools. So, it is your job to make your application as strong as possible with a compelling case for your admission. I would suggest adding a couple safety schools to your target list, gokce123, as you want to have alternatives in the event your top choices pass on you.

Good luck, gokce123!
