Board of Directors? Singular or Plural?

Board of Directors? Singular or Plural?

I thought it was singular but I read some where that it is plural....

Can anyone explain?

Singular. Board is a singular noun. 'of directors' is just a modifying prepositional phrase. So a sentence should look like - The board of directors is.....

Try taking the prep phrase out and sounding it out. The board is... sounds way better than The board are....
