X,Y Inequality

Is X + Y < 1
(1) X < 8/9
(2) Y < 1/8
Why C is incorrect and[spoiler] E is the answer.

Can someone please give the explanation.

because 8/9+1/8=73/72, so X +Y < 73/72, which doesn't answer anything
