Verbal Trouble

by Niketa17 » Wed Oct 15, 2014 7:08 pm
Hi,

Please can anyone advise me how is e- gmat for verbal for non-natives or is there any other similar course available where I can explore my options?
I have been preparing for gmat for around a month and was getting a score in the range of 34-37 in all my practice tests. However, I bombed it in the actual gmat and got a score of 22.
I have no idea what went wrong and where did I miss!! :(

Thanks in advance...

Hi Niketa17,

To properly figure out why your score dropped, it's not practical to say "I don't know why...."; instead, you have to define the details behind how you studied and assess them. For example:

1) How long did you study?
2) What were your specific scores on each of your practice CATs?
3) What were the details behind how you took each of those CATs (what "brand" of CAT, did you take the ENTIRE CAT, what time of day, what location, etc.)?
4) What practice materials did you use?
5) What did you do the week before Test Day?
6) What were the details behind Test Day?
Etc.

If you can answer the above questions, then I should be able to offer you some practical advice. Remember that the details MATTER, so you have to really think about what was going on and describe those details. With that perspective, you'll be better able to fix whatever mistakes were made and ultimately raise your GMAT score.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply.
Yes I have answers to your questions. I studied for around two months. I also took an off from work for one month, focusing entirely on preparation. The material used by me was:

1. MGMAT Material
2. Verbal OG
3. QA OG
4. OG 12 and 13

I gave all the following tests:

1. GMAT Club Tests
2. 5 Manhattan Tests
2. Veritas Free Test
3. The Economist Free Test
4. GMAC Prep Tests (5 times)
5. Veritas Quiz too where i could select my questions

I took the tests on alternate days as I wanted to fully analyze the mistakes made by me. I made an error log of all the tests given by me and all the questions done by me of the various OGs. I started with the MGMAT material for theory. I moved on to OGs and then test series.
I used to take the entire CAT except for the GMAC ones as the IR questions are repeated in it. I preferred taking the test in the same time slot as my actual GMAT in order to build up my endurance.

I was not securing very high in my test but my score was constantly improving and was always between 650-700. Last GMAC was 710 but highly inflated because i had reset it 5 times. My QA was in the range of 44-49 and VA in the range of 34-37 in all the tests. I wanted to maximize my score in VA so went through my notes which I had made while studying MGMAT SC a couple of times. Also, I kinda liked studying VA so I solved SC and CR of OGs twice or thrice. By the end, my SC had a fixed accuracy between 80-90%.

A week before the test I revised my error logs, looked at my mistakes and resolved the incorrect questions.I also revised my notes on QA theory and SC theory. I gave one last GMAC Prep 4 days before the test.

I had changed my schedule as my GMAT was in the morning slot. I got into the habit of getting up early so that I do not face any problem on the D-day. The day before the exam i revised my error logs and went through my notes. I slept at 9 in the night as I wanted to have 8 hours sleep before the exam.
I got up as per my revised schedule on the D-day had a heavy breakfast and went through some easy CR and SC, to get my mind working. I also did this to make myself comfortable and get my mind working so that i don't get boggle down seeing IR as the first thing in the exam.

However, I am at a loss at what happened during the D-day. I was expecting a VA in the range of 34-37 if not more and QA in the range of 44-47.

Please help me with this as I am planning to give GMAT again after a month by the end of November.

Thanks in advance :)
