Basics Please

by Codebreaker2k » Thu Feb 14, 2013 9:23 am
What GMAT score should one be attaining before moving on from the basics to the more advanced material? From what I have read the test is heavily focused on the basics so without those building blocks one won't make much more progress. Experts, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you.

The fact that you are able to achieve a fairly good (650+) score does not necessarily mean that you have covered all the basics perfectly. During the preparation stage when you are learning theory, try to do one test a week and analyze your mistakes in detail. Then try to improve on these particular question types that you have not solved correctly or that have taken too long to tackle.

Don't try to quantify it with a specific score: "this score is the magic tipping point from basics to advanced!" That approach makes no sense.

You have to ask yourself - have you MASTERED the basics? I don't just mean have you read the guides and done a lot of problems. Do you have a deep understanding of how the concept it tested, and could you tackle any new problem that tests that concept? Could you write your own GMAT questions for that concept? If so, move on to the advanced. If you're not sure, spend more time thinking about the basics. Not just more time doing, but more time thinking.
