Very Confused - 700 - Please Help

by tihor » Fri Sep 04, 2009 2:30 am
Hi -

I took the real GMAT on 8/31 and scored 700 with a 67th percentile math and 95th percentile verbal.

During the math section, I got nervous, but my woe's were also compounded by running out of scratch paper and losing time while waiting for it to be replenished.

I am not sure how to move from this spot, if I retake the exam.

My weakness in Math is that I am slow to read and formulate the problems for fear of getting them wrong. And also that I use a lot of scratch paper.

What resources could I use to prepare for Math again?
I have used Manhattan, GMAT Prep and OG so far, but can not say I have gone through them thoroughly. How can I practice speed? Where can I learn shortcuts?

Any opinion will be very appreciated. Thank you very much.

Sounds like you are the classic "poet" profile. Congrats on your seven handle. I am going to sound really biased here, but sounds like you need to take a prep course. PArticularly for math, a prep course will give you the confidence you lack when tackling the quant section. Prep courses will be very systematic in their approach, allowing your mind to better organize its approach to the test when you actually take it again. In particular, VEritas Prep courses actually teach you the math, not just a bunch of tricks which may or may not help you. Veritas courses are all taught by instructors who pass a rigorous evaluation on teaching technique, and also who personally scored in the 99th percentile on an actual GMAT sitting. You can also retake all or part of a course over and over until you are happy with your score. One other sales point: you can choose to only take the math instruction, since you clearly have the verbal part down cold....this saves you money by not having to take the whole course. There are other good prep companies out there as well, but I have personally seen very satisfied graduates of the Veritas classes, so it's the only one I can speak to with authority. Good luck in getting your quant up--you'll be glad you put the time in when it's all over and done.
