Litterature

by bergstrom » Mon Nov 16, 2009 12:43 pm
Hey,

I'm wondering which litterature that would be recommended for GMAT prep. target score 650-700, preferably over 700. I think the recommended list under resources seems a bit thin, any suggestions? English is my second language, not to bad at it but I'm guessing I have to spend some time on that part aswell.

Regards,
Linus

Are you asking about GMAT text books, or resources to help you specifically with English?

I'm talking about GMAT textbooks. I don't have any books at the moment and I've got my first test scheduled to the 29th of January. My plan is to study fulltime for two months starting 1:st of december (when I get back from my exchange semester in South Africa). Quite obvisouly I won't reach my target score in such short time but I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a good base to boost my score further during the first half of 2010.

So basically I'm asking for a list of recommended litterature to cover all the aspects of GMAT as throughly as possible.

Thanks for clarifying. You definitely need the Official Guide series books, I recommend those three books to all GMAT test takers. For a good GMAT overview book, either Kaplan Premier or TPR Cracking the GMAT are usually what I recommend.

Here are some recent book reviews we've published to help you understand these books some more: https://www.beatthegmat.com/a/book-reviews

Good luck!

Ah, haven't seen the review section until now. Thank you very much! I'll start off by ordering the official guides as well as Kaplan or TPR and take it from there. Probably enough information to keep me busy for a couple of months anyway :)

How long do you plan to prepare? Not sure that just those two books are going to be enough, unless you're prepping slowly.

I'm planning to start by studying fulltime for two months. Probably end up doing 40 effecient hours a week so somewhere around 300 hours before my first try.

If you have any other suggestions of litterature that might help, please fire away!

2 months is good, but 40 hours/week might be a bit much--maybe 15-20hrs week is okay, anything beyond that might make you burn out. And also remember that quality of prep is much more important than quantity.

I re-read your original message and saw that you ordered the OG series as well, so you actually have 5 books. That's a great start. If you need help with Sentence Correction, I recommend the MGMAT Sentence Correction Guide. For Critical Reasoning, I recommend the PowerScore Critical Reasoning Bible. And if you need to brush up on math with a great fundamentals book, Kaplan GMAT Math Workbook. But consider these books supplements that can come later as needed as you prep.
