Sprain ankle:

by \'manpreet singh » Mon Aug 26, 2013 12:59 am
It has been said that all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and to lie with it in a slightly elevated position.

a-all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and to
b-all one can do for a sprained ankle is to leave it alone to heal itself, to ice it, and
c-all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, and then ice it and
d-the only thing that can be done for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and
e-the only thing that can be done for a sprained ankle is to leave it alone while it heals itself, to ice it, and

Ans d

I go with C, D sounds absurd, it should be "is to leave it". basically D does not sound good on the ear too. It comes automatically to use "is to leave it"

You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

parallelism folks!.. D is the right answer this is an OG question

B .. it should be "to lie"

After looking at many answer explanations, i have come to realize that Parallelism trumps any other grammar rule. ..

Hi Vinay,

This is a pure parallelism question. D might sound wordy but it is the best out of all 5 as it removes "to" from the list of activities. In all the other options if you see carefully "to" is not following the parallelism rule.

Yes bharath, you are correct even i realized this quite late in my prep, that parallelism is to be fooled religiously in written english especially on GMAT. :)

Hi All,

When you see an SC with commas in it, the prompt will either be based on Modification or Parallelism Rules.

Here, we have a straight-forward example of a "3 Item List"; make sure that all the items are parallel (and don't commit any style mistakes) and you'll have the correct answer. You will see an SC just like this on Test Day, so make sure that you're ready for it.

Rich,

Can you elaborate specifically on this question. I seem lost somewhere!

Hi vinay1983,

This SC lists 3 things that you can do for a sprained ankle. According to "parallelism" rules, all 3 things have to have the same "format" (same style, same types of verbs, same order of words).

The correct answer follows those rules; notice the 3 items:

...leave it alone while it heals....
...ice it....
...lie with it in a slightly elevated position.

They all have the same format, type of verb, etc.
