I don't think the Q is testing that idiom because every answer choice has as well as in it.

D is not correct.

Interesting Question .. My pick D.

I didn't pick A as usage of 'they' pronoun seems redundant.

Very good question indeed.

I would have actually gone with (B) because of as well as that of at the end of the option, this is the only option that compares *success* of 1)newer and smaller companies and 2) large Conglomerates - correctly.

But rest of the words in (B) are not the best; on GDay I would select (B) only because of the above mentioned point.

I think its C.
Only C makes the correct comparison

They take an active role now in the success both of companies that are newer smaller companies as well as those(companies) of large conglomerates.

A & D are wrong because they are ambigous.
both companies that are newer and smaller as well as large Conglomerates OR
both companies that are newer and smaller as well as large Conglomerates

B compares 'newer smaller companies' to 'that'(success) of large conglomerates.

E take an active role now in both the success of newer, smaller companies as well as (Compares success of smaller companies to large conglomerates

Answer is B. It's not testing an idiom. Just take "both of companies that are newer smaller companies...and the "that" refers to "success". Success of the (both) companies that are newer smaller as well as that (success) of Conglomerates.
Looking for 780~

OA is B

Beatthegmat & duke hit the nail.

success both of is awkward when compared to success of both.

How ever, we have to understand that the success itself and not the companies themselves.

I am still not convinced that B makes the correct comparison !!!In that case ir would have been ' ..both success of ...as well as that(success) of ... !!
