A certain bank charges a maintenace fee on a standard checking account each month that the balance falls below $1000.00 at any time during the month. Did the bank charge a maintenace fee on Sue's standard checking account?

1) at the beginning of last month, Sue's account balance wa $1500.00

2) During last month, a total of $2000.00 was widthdrawn.

Answer is E

IMO Answer is C

Is this a mistake on the test makers?

Tj,

Please provide ur explanation for C so that we could help u better.
Its E since we have no info to say how much she deposited and if the balance remained > = 1000. All we know is she should have put atleast 500 so that she could withdraw 2000 with a beginning balance of 1500
Hope this helps!

Regards,

1) tell us that she had $1500.00 dollars to start with.

2) tell us that she withdrew $2000.00 dollars over the month

Together it tell us right away that she has a negative balance of $500.00, which means she would have been charged a fee.

why do we need to bother about knowing about the deposits?

(1) and (2) together are not sufficient. Suppose she did make no other deposits for the rest of the month. She would have been charged a fee as you pointed out.

Consider the case where on the first day of the month she deposits $5000. Then there is no charge.

So (1) and (2) together is not sufficient to determine whether or not her account will be charged a fee. The answer is E.

yes.

more simply, we don't know whether sue has made any deposits during the month in question.
you can't assume that she has made $0 in deposits.

in fact, i think the amounts in question are meant to "clue you in" a bit: your conclusion of a negative $500 balance doesn't make a lot of sense, so that should get you thinking about other factors (such as deposits) that could legitimize the possibility of withdrawing $2000 in a month in which the initial balance was $1500.
