Not getting better :(

by rc_sunil » Sat Aug 21, 2010 11:15 am
Well I think I am in a crisis now, one month to go and I am no where near even the 600 mark.
So far i followed 60 day BTG guide, OG12, Kaplan and MGMAT SC.

GMAT Prep 1 - 530 first week (Q35, V28)
MGMAT Cat 1 - 540 a week later (Q42, V23)
MGMAT CAt 1 (repeated) - 530 3 weeks later (Q35, V28)

Am I back to square 1 ?

I am still going through a lot of theoritical stuff on how, what and when on various quant and verbal topics. I see I am certainly week in SC/CR , RC i do good if I concentrate so i just need practice, but SC/CR no clue. So based on a lot of suggestions in this forum, I am adopting MGMAT SC from the last 2-3 days, hope to finish it in next 4-5 days.
I improved from 23/24 to 28 on it Verbal but not getting that far yet.

Any suggestions to speed up my verbal section.

I am gonna take one more test later today and I hope I really am not at square 1.
I will be depressing to reconfirm that !!

My suggestion: You just need plane practice .. You gotta practice lotta questions on each topics and subtopics .. Practice lot of problems, understand the reasoning behind wrong answers,.. that should do.

Hi rc_sunil,

Exactly same thing is happening with me right now.
I started my preparation without giving any pre tests. I studied for about 3 months now.
First two months I spent on basic things and reading Manhattan SC and CR Bible books.
Then I gave Manhattan test-1 score : 600 (Q 39 and V 34) and Princeton : 590 ( Q 46 and V 26 )

After a month of studies, I gave Manhattan2 : 570 (Q :41 and V :28). I was not able to believe that I scored less in this one. So I decided to give GMAT prep 1 and to make the matter worse the score was 550 ( Q : 41 and V :22 )

During my study preparation, I am consistently studying and I am analyzing my mistakes from the tests.
Have done with OG12 and half of the OG10.

I am not getting the downward trend in my verbal score despite of studying more for Verbal than Quant.
Again it's very much depressing for me. Fortunately I haven't taken a test date yet though I though it earlier.
Because I think, I don't need a test date to study. I am making sure that I study 3-4 hours daily except one day off.

Please help.

Thanks,
Chait

Chait, yes I agree it is depressing but I think I am able to cash in better after I am running through the MGMAT SC stuff. It is really cool, some big wigs on this forum like Eric and team have suggested that and there is no doubt its giving me a confidence. I have another set of practice tests planned here this week. I will post what I find out.
Fortunate or unfortunate I already have a date here in one month !!!

This is what I am tryin' right now and its boosting my confidence:

Combination of MGMAT SC chapters with OG 12:
1. Go chapter by chapter
2. DO NOT MISS the exercises listed by MGMAT at the end of each one, its very very benficial.
3. V.imp: Mark the critical citations of GMAT that they illustrate and how its different from general English. This proved to be critical for me because I was pretty judgemental coming into SC - that kinda kicked me in the back.
4. Note them down, in a quick ref notes or somewhere.
5. Do the SC section exercises in OG 11/12 matching to the topics you revise in MGMAT SC

Last but not the least - read, read and read a lot. Another one of my weaknesses However I am seriously casting that one out, so have picked up on couple of boooks. I make sure to read atleast 20-25 pages a day of plain, neat and well contructed english - books, news articles and sports reviews.

@Praveen - right dude, I am lacking practice here. Lets see I want to break the 600 mark this week with the stuff that I put on OG and MGMAT SC. I do review my answers quite often, even the right ones, but I go into each question or its explanation with prejudice which I have to get over. I seriously think that, that is limiting a lot of my ability right now.

Any flaw in what I am trying or anything you see missing - please comment folks. I am willing to take any criticism if its gonna contruct me :)

I will follow your suggestions and hopefully it will improve my score.
I think I should be "back to basics" then. I am starting Manhattan SC once again.

Its been a while, sorry for not being able to post here.
Well I was finally able to break the 600 mark ! I scored 3 600+ scores and all that we need is more practice.

Veritas Prep: 610
MGMAT GMAT1 : 600
GMAT PREP1: 620

I used MGMAT books for SC, CR and RC. The tips and tricks are really good. I would recommend that to all.

Something that helped me, which was an advice from someone in the forums, was that for each question in the verbal section you should exactly articulate why the other options are bad and the one you chose is good. Understand the reason behind the correct and incorrect choices. I used to blindly make choices by just reading and analysing on my own, but a strategy given by certain good books helps a long way.
