"That" can be both singular and plural.

Example:-

Plural
John has found a pen and a pencil that were missing from his drawer.


Singular
John has found a pen that was missing from his drawer.

that's a good discussion point...

i am confused too... i saw in a sentence where that was used to refer to plural subject
but was eliminated when compared to those..and the reason for elimination was .. THAT is singular....

i will try to find the sentence....
