What score could I get?

by mjjking » Thu May 24, 2007 11:44 pm
Hi there,
I'm an italian student. I'm about to start studying for the GMAT. I've done some math review so far, but not too many exercises.
I've taken the Princeton Review GMAT test offered on their website last saturday, and I scored 590, Verbal 34 Math 37. I'm going for 6 weeks to the USA in order to further improve my english skills (my toefl is around 101 IBT at the moment), and I plan to study at least two months for the GMAT before taking it sometime in September.
Realistically, what score do you thik I could get? Do you think a 650 would be feasible or not?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Just to let you know I've just taken the TurboPrep GMAT test and I scored - again - a 590! 39 Q and 31 V. Funny... different tests, same overall score...

I think your target score is certainly achievable. With a great study strategy and disciplined schedule, you may be able to do it. Take some time to read my GMAT blog, https://beatthegmat.blocked and the GMAT Resource Wiki, https://www.beatthegmat.com/wiki/ to get some tips on how to start.

Best of luck!

My fault, it was Power Prep, from mba.com, non turboprep! :-)
So, do you really think it would be possible to achieve 650? Or it will be a struggle?

Hi ya!
Haha, mjjking refers to old times, when I was a kid... it just remained as a good nickname.
Yes, I will go to the USA for the TOEFL, for studying for the GMAT in an all-emglish environment and for tasting american university life.I think it's important, as it's a completely different world from Italian one... I will enjoy, and learn from it.

Do you think a preparation course, such as MLICET, would help?

I'd say 650 is achieveable, but it will take some work. Prep courses might help, but it's certainly do-able on your own. :)

for me I watch hollywood movies and TV series, which help (have been helping) me understand the american accent and culture.

BTW google 'MJJ GMAT ' keywords and search & you'd know why I was curious about your userid ;)

One more thing...

Thanks for your replies, really! You gave me confidence! I will join a MLICET online course, they offer you a 600+ score guarantee, they seem pretty professional, do you know them?

Do you remember my previous practice PowerPrep test score? It was 590, Q 39 V 31. But I must admit that in 3-4 or maybe 5 math questions, I answered basing myself on "good intuition", that is I choose the answer basing myself on few mental operations and assumptions which eventually were right or wrong. Is this common? I mean, is it common that before starting studying for the gmat one doesn't know how to answer some questions matametically? Was I just lucky? SHould my score have been lower? The same applies to the Princeton Review test... Was I just lucky?

Thanks!

It's common that, even after studying, you will answer some questions based upon logic, estimation, or even just good old-fashioned educated guessing. :)

You will not know how to do everything on the test because the test is pulling from a pool of thousands of questions - however well you do, the test can (and will) throw something at you that is too hard for you.

There is a small amount of luck / serendipity involved whenever you take the test, because you could happen to get more questions in topic areas you're good at or more in topic areas you're not so good at. In general, though, PowerPrep scores are fairly indicative of your current performance level. (This is not true of all practice tests of course - some are poorly made.)

Good luck!
