Approximately two hundred brands of personal computers are being manufactured, but we currently limit our inventory to only the eight most popular brands. We plan to increase greatly the number of computers we sell by expanding our inventory to include the ten best-selling brands.
Which of the following, if true, points out a major weakness of the plan above?
(A) The capabilities of three most popular personal computers add to be approximately equivalent, with no brand having consistent superiority in all respects.
(B) The seven most popular brands of personal computers account for almost all computers sold.
(C) As the users of personal computers become more sophisticated, they are more willing to buy less well-known brands of computers.
(D) Less popular brands of computers often provide less profit to the retailer because prices must be discounted to attract customers.
(E) The leading brand of personal computer has been losing sales to less popular brands that offer similar capabilities for less money.

IMO C....If customers are willing to buy less well-known computers, then seller plan will fail and that option will weaken the passage

C does the same thing.

I think B, because the seller says "that are going to increase the sales greatly"

But since most of the sales come from top 7 brands that they already have in store, there is not much scope left to increase sales by including more brands

A & D - no impact on the argument ie does not show whether sale will increase or decrease
C & E - shows sale will increase (customer prefer less popular brands...implies higher chances of less popular brands)
IMO B - if top 7 account for most of the sale...adding additional 3 will have no impact on sale

Objective of the plan: To increase the Sale of Number of COmputers.

How to achieve the plan : To include 2 more top selling brands in the existing Inventory.

How can we weaken the Dealer's plan?

B does it straighaway! (B) The seven most popular brands of personal computers account for almost all computers sold.

C gives a subtle scope shift. It says users prefer less known brands. But we are not sure how many users are prefering it?we are not sure how many of them has become " sophisticated" with Personal computers. C has inherent flaws and it cannot be a weakener to Dealer's plan.
When in doubt always ask a Question to the option "So what"?? ..If u can provide a answer to that one, then it is CERTAINLY NOT the selected answer.

Any doubts on the above explanation, I can write more on that.

Which of the following, if true, points out a major weakness of the plan above?

Weaken--attack the conclusion..attack the premise sometime..show that premise does not necassarily cause the conclusion....or show that they are reverse...

Lets paraphrase and think about the answers:
making it ten may be not the right way because may be only top 8 constitute 99% of sales..
may be you will have to increase the price of the computers as the cost has increased
May be its just too much work to get those extra 2
May be there is not enough staff to handle that and they are paid less:)

(A) The capabilities of three most popular personal computers add to be approximately equivalent, with no brand having consistent superiority in all respects.
This is just a premise being added ...does not attack any conclusion

(B) The seven most popular brands of personal computers account for almost all computers sold.
This is one of the paraphrase :) Keeper...will come back...
Correct answer...I hope:)

(C) As the users of personal computers become more sophisticated, they are more willing to buy less well-known brands of computers.
This is just a premise being added ...does not attack any conclusion ...may be this company's product are the low cost alternative..

(D) Less popular brands of computers often provide less profit to the retailer because prices must be discounted to attract customers.
Again unrelated premise being added

(E) The leading brand of personal computer has been losing sales to less popular brands that offer similar capabilities for less money
but still its the best performer...

The plan here is to increase the number of computers in the inventory greatly by including 2 more brands. Choice B would be the most weakening sentence because if top 7 brands account for almost all the computers sold then it would make minimal change in the number of computers in the inventory if he includes two more brands. Hence, B is the answer.
