It was an increase in reported cases of malaria along the Gulf Coast that in 1921
led the health authorities' granting a permit for experimentation with human
subjects to the group that later would be called by the name of Unimedco.

(A) authorities' granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the
group that later would be called by the name of
(B) authorities' granting a permit for experimentation with human subjects to the
group that later to be called by the name of
(C) authorities' granting a permit for experimentation using human subjects to the

A/B/C - it it not clear who were called Unimedco. It could be either subjects or group. Furthermore AUTHORITIES TO GRANT is prefered over AUTHORITIES' GRANTING.

D vs E - in D THAT is missing and also WOULD BE requird to show that calling by the Unimedco happened after the permission were granted

A?? Because I thought human experimentation is different from experimentation with human subjects.

Human experimentation - refers to experiments performed by humans

while experimentation with human subjects could be a different thing altogether.

Can somebody please explain me if I am wrong?

It boils down to option D and E. E seems to be wordy. IMO D

In A, B and C, an increase in reported cases...led the...granting does not convey the intended meaning. The increase did not lead the granting; it led TO the granting. Eliminate A, B and C.

In E, CALLED by the NAME of is redundant. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is D.

some related doubt - could you pls clarify:

1) If E were "authorities to grant a permit for human experimentation to the group that later
would be called", would you still select D?

2) Does the 'would be' and 'called' signify the same thing in the given context. If yes, is it because of the use of LATER (LATER CALLED is same as LATER WOULD BE CALLED?)

3) Does Unimedco clearly refers to GROUP in A/B/C?

I am a little confused between "human experimentation" and "experimentation with human". Are these two same things?

I don't think that the GMAT would force such a choice upon us.

The group later called Unimedco = noun + adverb + ADJECTIVE.
Called = adjective. What kind of group? The group CALLED Unimedco.
Later = adverb. When was the group called Unimedco? LATER.

That later would be called Unimedco = pronoun + adverb + VERB.
Here, would be called is a VERB. A VERB must be put in the proper tense. The tense here makes it clear that AFTER the other past actions, the group WOULD BE CALLED Unimedco.
Whereas in the first construction later modifies an adjective (called), here the adverb modifies a verb (would be called).

There is no substantive difference in meaning between the two constructions.

3) Does Unimedco clearly refers to GROUP in A/B/C?

In A, B and C, of Unimedco modifies the name. What kind of NAME? The name OF UNIMEDCO.

4) What does '{The increase did not lead the granting}' and '{it led TO the granting} mean - how they are different. Could you pls give some examples

The increase led the granting means that the increase GUIDED the granting. This is not the intended meaning here.

The increase led the authorities TO grant the permit means that the increase INDUCED the authorities to grant the permit. This is the intended meaning here.

Answer is D.

A B and C can be killed because of the possessive which does not make sense in this context.

Between D and E, E is more wordy.

NO EXCUSES
