The upcoming presidential election in the West African republic of Ganelon is of grave concern to the U.S. State Department. Ganelon presently has strong political and military ties to the United States. However, the Socialist party is widely expected to win the election, leading to fears that Ganelon will soon break away from the pro-American bloc and adopt a nonaligned or openly anti-American stance.
Which of the following is an assumption made in the passage above?
(A) A Socialist party government in Ganelon is more likely to oppose the United States than is a non-Socialist party government.
(B) The people of the United States recognize their nation’s interest in the political stability of West Africa.

A and E are close

But E violate the fact set.

So IMO A -- negate this, conclusion falls apart

Although A and D are close..

I eliminated D becoz of teh word 'best' which I thought was extreme..
Also, denial test best suits A..

what is OA .. please post it too with the qs using the spoiler fn..

IMO E answers.

A and E comes close.

The question reads "The upcoming presidential election in the West African republic of Ganelon is of grave concern to the U.S. State Department". If the problem is because of both the parties then it would not have been from the upcoming elections alone. The concern would have been raised in the past also. So A can be ruled out.

Am I missing out something?? What is OG telling??

Anand.....I can see that E would be correct, were A not one of the choices.
Actually A is the extension of E along with additional information. A shows the anticipation of US government, which fear an anti-US environment in that nation, if the socialist party wins. OA is A

Statement (A) is correct, as the Americans assume that socialist part is not their ally and hence does not allay their fears when the socialist party comes to power.Hence (a).
