X Intercept?

by Bullzi » Mon Sep 28, 2015 5:11 am
Hello..

I wanted to check with you if in Coordinate Geometry, the words X Intercept always refer to the point where a line intersects the x-axis. I don't remember the exact question, however, I think I encountered a question somewhere where the phrase X Intercept was used to refer to a random point on the xy plane and not the point of intersection with the x-axis. Is this usage valid or is my memory playing games with me!?

Thanks
Bullzi

Hi Bullzi,

Your mind may be playing tricks :-)
The x-intercept refers to the point where a line/curve crosses the x-axis.

Here are a couple of questions that involve x- and y-intercepts:

Hi Bullzi,

The 'X-intercept' is the point at which the graph crosses the X-axis. The 'X-co-ordinate' is the first number in a pair of numbers (and each pair can be graphed at a particular point in the XY plane).

X-intercepts ALWAYS have a Y-co-ordinate of 0.

(2,0), (0,0) and (-7,0) are all examples of X-intercepts.

The X-co-ordinate in those 3 examples is 2, 0 and -7 respectively.
