Pronoun Question

by tothetopppppp » Thu Dec 13, 2012 6:40 am
They went to the supermarket to buy groceries, but the husband and wife came home empty-handed.

Is the above sentence incorrect because 'They' cannot be the subject of the first independent clause even though it represents 'the husband and wife'?

Any insight helps, much appreciated.

In the context of the GMAT this would not be the best answer; however, you might see something like this:

While they were at the supermarket, the husband and wife could not find anything to buy.
